Many dream of the opportunity to own their own business and become their own boss. The thought of being able to be in charge of their everyday life while supporting their family financially is the ultimate reward. While these potential entrepreneurs tend to be very passionate about owning their own business, they often do not do the work required to create a good business plan before they open their businesses. This failure to plan is usually the demise of their dreams.

Credit card processing might not be a concept that many potential business owners would spend a great deal of time thinking about when preparing a business plan. However, having the ability to accept credit cards is crucial in serving today’s consumers.

Most people do not carry cash like people did years ago. Instead, they depend on their debit cards or credit cards for spending. If businesses do not have merchant accounts set up, they will not be able to serve these customers. In fact, many customers will not even do business with a company if they do not take debit or credit cards because they want the protection the credit card companies offer their customers on their purchases.

When setting up merchant accounts, all companies are not the same, and it is important to do research to be sure the merchant offers services that can serve the customers who will patron the new business.

Companies that will have an online presence will definitely need to accept credit and debit cards for purchases. The business owner should ask questions about the customer experience the merchant will provide their customers for the online purchase. It is important to make sure the processing is not complicated and that the customer will receive an email confirmation for their purchase.

If the company also has a brick and mortar presence in addition to an online store, the credit card processing needs will be different. The store personnel will require a credit card swiping system in addition to the processing system online. The swipe system is much faster for customers making purchases inside the store verses the store associate entering the information into an online processing system. The swipe equipment is definitely worth the small extra cost.

Setting up merchant accounts as part of the business planning process will set the stage for a greater chance for business success. Choosing the right processing company can increase the customer base for the new company while saving the business owner money.
